Role of the TMO
To understand your role as a TMO Operator we will firstly clarify the role of the TMO.
According to the laws of the game:
6.15 A match organiser may appoint a Television Match Official (TMO), who uses technological devices to clarify situations relating to:
- The grounding of the ball in in-goal.
- Touch or touch-in-goal in the act of grounding the ball or the ball being made dead.
- Where there is doubt as to whether a kick at goal has been successful.
- Where match officials believe an infringement may have occurred in the playing area leading to a try or preventing a try.
- Foul play, including sanctions.
6.16 Any of the match officials, including the TMO, may recommend a review by the TMO. The reviews will take place in accordance with the TMO protocol which is available here.
To perform their role in this process the TMO should:
- Pre-Game
- Connect and ensure the TMO Operator is aware of expectations and processes
- Participate in the pre-game briefing with Match Official team
- In Game
- Finalise accurate decisions as per the TMO protocol
- Request angles from the operator and communicate effectively with both the TMO Operator and Match Official team.
The TMO should embrace diversity, practice inclusivity and always conduct themselves in an appropriate and professional manner in and out of the TMO location and while taking part in any related activities (including social or group events).
