During the match, the TMO Operator must be aware that in addition to fulfilling the TMO Protocol, the system is also used in a variety of different ways and scenarios which you will be involved in.  

The TMO will use the system to continually sweep the game looking at infractions that will constitute a formal review, but also to aid the on-pitch match officials where they can. These can result in Live Referral calls and clarifications. Examples of these are: 

  • High tackles 
  • Clear-outs at rucks and mauls 
  • Cynical play 
  • Touch and Touch-in-goal decisions 
  • Correcting restarts 
  • 50:22 
  • Confirming penalties 
  • Location of penalty and free kick marks 
  • Marks – inside or outside the 22m area 
  • Knock-forwards and forward passes 
  • Offsides 
  • Groundings 
  • Obstructions 
  • Live calls 
  • Kicks at goal – conversions and penalties. 
  • Injuries and breaks in play 
  • Timings, whistles and shot clocks
