Technical and Operations
In the general play examples, the skills and ability of the operator are crucial, and underpin the process. They are not just specific to formal reviews and rolling on air.
In-booth demeanour
The TMO Operator must remain focused during the whole match. This will enable them to respond quickly when needed and ensure they do not distract the TMO.
This does not mean silence in the booth but using common sense and taking direction from the TMO in high-stakes moments and asking for clarifications in less time-sensitive moments. The two most important things to remember as a TMO Operator are:
- not to influence the TMO in their decision making
- to listen to and follow the TMO’s instructions.
Clear communication
Communication is an essential part of the Formal Review process. It occurs between the TMO, the Director, and an Assistant Operator should there be one. The Operator should stay calm and on-task, doing what the TMO has asked and listening to the on-field Match Official team who may request a specific angle or speed of replay. Effective communication with the Assistant Operator ensures that ‘back-up’ angles are ready and waiting for use in the review.
