New Law Book published and Laws app launched

The 2025 Laws of the Game book as well as a refreshed laws app are now available to either update or download.

Whichever version you chose to use, they all include the new Global Law Trials which came into effect on January 1, 2025.

The app, available through the iOS App store and Android Playstore, has been rebuilt and includes the laws of the game, the different variations of the game, law clarifications, application guidelines and match official signals.  As it's a fully rebuilt app, it may take longer to update than is normal. Please ensure you have stable internet coverage to allow it to update.

Terminology changes

The law book and app introduces a number of minor changes in terminology which were agreed with the World Rugby Council in November 2024. These form part of a plan to make some incremental changes to to reflect common usage, and to make the game easier to understand for fans, players and match officials alike. For example, references to the "goal line" in the laws becomes the "try line", reflecting what the vast majority call it anyway.

The following terms have been updated:

Previous Term New Term
Goal line Try line
Goal line drop-out Try line drop-out
Latched Pre-bound
Temporary suspension Yellow carded
Permanent exclusion Red carded
Knock-on Knock forward
Jackal/Jackler Steal/Stealer
