Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a condition that involves fits or seizures. A seizure is random electrical activity in the brain that causes the muscles in the body to contract and the casualty to lose consciousness. The player shakes violently usually for 20-30 seconds up to a few minutes. Occasionally, a fit can go on for much longer.

There is little than can be done other than get emergency help and move any hazards out of the way so that the patient doesn’t injury themselves during the seizure. Once the seizure is over, the casualty can be very sleepy for a couple of hours. Place them in the recovery position and keep them warm with a blanket until help arrives.

If the player is not known to have epilepsy and has been taking part in contact sport, the seizure may be related to a head injury.
