Match Day Staff

Welcome to the Match Day Staff strand.

The online modules in this strand aim to:

  • introduce the different roles and function of Match Day Staff (Match Commissioner, Citing Commissioner, Judicial Officer) at Regional or World Rugby tournaments
  • prepare participants for attending our face-to-face courses.

Completion of these online modules are a pre-requisite for attending our corresponding face-to-face Match Day Staff courses.

Match Commissioner Programme

This programme aims to develop Match Commissioners for both World Rugby and regional tournaments through a competency-based training programme which builds knowledge and skills.

Citing Commissioner Training

This resource provides guidance for Citing Commissioners to discharge their responsibilities in a fair and balanced manner. It also provides clarity to other stakeholders of the game with regards to the role and parameters of the job.

Judicial Training

The purpose of the training is to harness your legal / rugby knowledge and help you apply it within the disciplinary regime with a view to driving consistent decision-making in line with the Laws, Regulations and refereeing interpretations in the modern game.

Switch Training

World Rugby’s Switch app has been developed to automate the recording of player movements and scores during a match. It is used by team managers and side-line officials to submit and confirm scores, replacements, yellow and red card sanctions, and temporary replacements for blood injury and HIA. The app also assists in identifying to officials when uncontested scrums should occur and what steps to take to make sure that the requirements of Law 3 are being met.

Face-to-face courses and accreditations

World Rugby works in conjunction with our Regional Associations and member unions to deliver a needs-based, blended learning portfolio of online learning and face-to-face attendance/accreditation courses. Our aim is to enable our member unions to become self-sustainable in the delivery of the entry/mid-level courses, whilst our higher level courses are delivered on a regional basis. Some of our larger member unions choose to deliver their own suite of Training and Education courses, so please check with your union to find out what training courses are available in the first instance. World Rugby’s face-to-face courses and accreditations are delivered by our network of over 2000 Licenced Trainers and Educators. This network delivers our courses on behalf of, and on the approval of, both their member unions and World Rugby. They are trained, quality assured, and licenced by World Rugby to do so. The full list of courses delivered is available below, along with the online pre-requsites which participants must complete before attending a course.
