Off-field or Office SCAT5© assessment - Step 4 - Neurological Screening

In all cases of concussion, a diverse neurological screen should be completed throughout the SCAT5© process including observations relative to the ability of the athlete to read aloud in Step 2 as well as a clinical assessment of the cervical spine comprising of an examination for local tenderness, range of movement and an upper limb neurological examination. The player should be also reviewed for the presence of double vision with sagittal and frontal head movements. Observations should also be completed relative to tandem gait and finger to nose tests.

The SCAT5© balance testing is the modified version of the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) The modified BESS has three measurements – double leg stance, single leg stance and tandem stance.
