Appendix 10 - Eating Disorders – SCOFF Questionnaire
The following questions can support decision making around whether the player needs further assessment regarding eating disorders.
SCOFF
S Do you make yourself Sick because you feel uncomfortably full? C Do you worry you have lost Control over how much you eat? O Have you recently lost more than One stone (6.35kg) in a three-month period? F Do you believe yourself to be Fat when others say you are too thin? F Would you say Food dominates your life? One point is assigned for every ‘yes’.
Interpreting the SCOFF
A positive response indicates one point. A score greater than two should raise the index of suspicion and referral for assessment by a mental health professional skilled in eating disorders is warranted.
You may also ask the following two questions for indications of bulimia nervosa:
- Are you satisfied with your eating patterns?
- Do you ever eat in secret?
Should you wish to ask further questions to help inform your referral the following are some additional questions that can be asked:
- Do you think you have an eating problem?
- Do you worry excessively about your weight?
- What do you eat in an average day?
- Which foods feel ‘safe’ and what do you avoid?
- Do you ever vomit, exercise, abuse laxatives and/or diuretics? If so how much and when?
- How often do you weigh yourself?
