Dehydration
This occurs when the amount of fluid from the body is not replaced sufficiently. Dehydration in players is a result of excessive sweating during sporting activities, especially in hot weather, with prolonged exposure to sun or heat in humid conditions. Severe dehydration may result in muscle cramps through the loss body salts, if untreated dehydration may lead to heat exhaustion.
Steps to manage dehydration:
- SABCDE assessment and reassure the player. Help them to sit down and give them plenty of fluid. Rehydration powders may help with slat replacement and rehydrate the casualty more quickly.
- If the player is suffering from cramps, stretch and massage the affected muscle.
- Reassess and if the player continues to be unwell seek medical advice.
