Coaching Role 1 – Architects of Identity

Great coaches, use the lever of us vs. them and optimal differentiation to build teamwork and collaboration. It is one of the most powerful tools you have.  And for good reason. The science is clear. We only collaborate (at personal cost) and show empathy with other people that we perceive as being in our tribes.

No wonder then, that reinforcing a shared team identity is everywhere in sport. From team names, to mascots, to club colours, to chants and songs, to nicknames, to unique rituals like the All Blacks’ Haka are everywhere you look. These are all identity levers being pulled to reinforce the team tribe (in-group identity).

In this Module called Architects for Identity, we unpick the science of team identity, look at practical techniques to create and reinforce this and learn the important role rituals and symbols play.
