Welcome to the Officiating strand.
The online modules in this strand aim to:
- Introduce you to officiating
- develop your analytical skills – helping you to observe matches (and match officials) more objectively
- provide the side-line personnel responsible for the technical zone with an overview of the required protocols.
We recommend that all Match Officials complete the Introductory module prior to attending our Face-to-face officiation courses.
Introduction to Match Officiating (Pre-Level 1)
This module aims to provide learners who have an interest in becoming a match official with a basic level of understanding of how to referee. Upon completion of this module you should be ready to undertake the face-to-face Introduction to Match Officiating (L1) course delivered by Licenced World Rugby Educators.
Match Observation Programme
The purpose of this online resource is to help various Rugby stakeholders to observe matches and match officials (MOs) more objectively. The resource can be used as an individual learning tool and it also acts as a prerequisite for the World Rugby Coaches of Match Officials (CMO) Level 1 course.
Technical Zone Programme
This module provides an introduction to the working of the Technical Zone – an area just as important to an effective game of elite rugby, as the playing enclosure itself.
Face-to-face courses and accreditations
World Rugby works in conjunction with our Regional Associations and member unions to deliver a needs-based, blended learning portfolio of online learning and face-to-face attendance/accreditation courses. Our aim is to enable our member unions to become self-sustainable in the delivery of the entry/mid-level courses, whilst our higher level courses are delivered on a regional basis. Some of our larger member unions choose to deliver their own suite of Training and Education courses, so please check with your union to find out what training courses are available in the first instance. World Rugby’s face-to-face courses and accreditations are delivered by our network of over 2000 Licenced Trainers and Educators. This network delivers our courses on behalf of, and on the approval of, both their member unions and World Rugby. They are trained, quality assured, and licenced by World Rugby to do so. The full list of courses delivered is available below, along with the online pre-requsites which participants must complete before attending a course.
