Defensive Breakdown Roles and Responsibilities

Tackler

It all starts with the Tackler, who should aim to stop the Ball Player and/or slow the attacking momentum. The Tackler should try to drive the Ball Player backwards or away from their support. The Tackler should endeavour to limit the Ball Player’s options, dominating the tackle contest. Depending on the progression of the tackle, the Tackler has several options:

  • Tackle, then roll east/west away from the tackle contest
  • Tackle, then compete for the ball
  • Tackle, then counter ruck through and over the ball line.

Responsibilities within the breakdown

The Tackler has the following responsibilities which must be conducted within the laws of the game:

  • Stop the Ball Player hitting space
  • Prevent the Ball Player going to ground on their terms
  • Prevent the Ball Player presenting the ball on their terms
  • Destabilise the Ball Player on the ground
  • Finish on top, roll out legally, then contest or counter if appropriate.
