Benefits of Conditioning
As mentioned previously, adequate conditioning is crucial in ensuring that Match Officials have a sufficient fitness level to meet the match demands of a full game, with minimal decrease in performance across halves. Having a high level of conditioning allows Match Officials to recover faster between high-intensity bouts and between games, which is especially important during tournaments with short periods between games. A well-structured conditioning program should prepare Match Officials for the specific demands that they meet during a game, involving periods of high-intensity activity interspersed with periods of low-intensity movement.
In addition to the benefit of being able to keep up with play, having good conditioning may have a positive impact on decision-making. External load can have a negative effect on the decision-making capability. In theory, if Match Officials can increase their fitness levels in order to resist the effects of fatigue during high-intensity periods, they may be better able to interpret play and apply the Laws of the game to a higher standard.
