Toe touch

The toe touch examines normal flexion or bending in the hips, spine and muscles of the lower back and legs. To perform the toe touch the coach gets the child to stand with feet together and toes pointing forward. Next, have the child bend forward from the hips and try to touch both ends of the fingers to the tips of the toes without bending the knees. A video of the setup and performance of the toe touch is shown below.

To score the toe touch the coach gives one point for each of the following:

  1. A posterior (backwards) weight shift occurs during bending.
  2. No sideways spine bend
  3. While keeping knees straight touches toes with fingers
  4. Shows a uniform spinal bend.
