Medical Emergencies

Overview

Upon completion of this chapter, you should understand the initial approach to the player with a medical emergency. You will have an awareness of the presentation and management of potentially life-threatening medical emergencies including asthma, hypoglycaemia, seizures, anaphylaxis.

Objectives

To understand that the initial approach to a medical emergency is the same as for a seriously injured player
To discuss the recognition and management of acute severe asthma
To discuss the recognition and management of hypoglycaemia
To discuss the recognition and management of seizures
To discuss the recognition and management of anaphylaxis
To discuss the recognition and management of temperature-related conditions and near drowning
