Module summary
This module raised some key issues for consideration when coaching youths between the ages of 13-18.
Peak height velocity (the start of adolescence) and the challenges facing the physical development of players in this period was examined. The issue of late versus early maturing individuals was also raised and it was highlighted that late maturing individuals are often at a disadvantage in a physical game like rugby. The relative age effect and associated consequences was also introduced.
The final stages of the LTAD model were introduced, highlighting that players in these stages should be starting to (and continue to) learn and develop the sports-specific skills and physical qualities needed to perform optimally.
