Introduction to Conditioning for Rugby

Rugby union is a high-intensity, intermittent contact sport requiring a combination of speed, strength, power and endurance (Duthie, 2006). As outlined previously, there are broad differences in game demands according to playing position, so it is crucial that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to conditioning, and coaches acknowledge these differences through position-specific programming. It is important that coaches not only take the running demands of match play into account when designing training and conditioning sessions, but also the physical demands, such as contact involvements. With conditioning programs for female athletes often being adapted from male-based models, without any acknowledgement of the physiological differences between male and female, coaches must acknowledge the differences in female physiology, such as the menstrual cycle, when programming for fitness conditioning (Heyward et al., 2020).
