The Clean - summary

The top-down using a part-whole method presented is one approach to coaching the Power Clean and Squat Clean. It is important to have a systematic approach when coaching any exercise and this is especially relevant for the weightlifting style exercises such as the Clean (or Power Clean) and the Snatch (or Power Snatch).

When coaching any resistance training exercise. It is important to remember the coaching sequence of:

  1. Posture and position
  2. Movement
  3. Resistance

From an Olympic lift perspective, coaches should utilise the sequence with one change, speed of movement taking priority before an increase in the resistance:

  1. Posture and position
  2. Movement
  3. Speed

The coach may train the player to become competent at completing the Power Clean. In addition, other derivatives of the Clean lift, such as the Hang Power Clean, the Pull from Hang or Mid-thigh Pull or any one of a variety of Clean derivatives may be successfully used in the programme. These derivatives will be demonstrated during the Level 2 face-to-face course.

The teaching and coaching competence of the coach is central to ensuring that the player learns and practices the Clean or its derivatives and all other exercises in a safe environment.
